B2B lead generation tools and software: how to choose your stack

The five kinds of B2B lead generation tools (signals, list building, contact data, outreach, CRM), what each does, and how to choose a stack.

By the GTM Plays teamUpdated 6 min read

"Lead generation tool" covers everything from a contact database to a LinkedIn automation app to an AI agent. This guide sorts the market into the jobs tools actually do, names well-known options in each category, and shows how to build a stack that fits your team without paying twice for the same thing.

Vendor descriptions below are summarised from each vendor's own website, checked in October 2026, and linked inline. Features change often, so check the vendor's site before you buy.

The five jobs of a lead generation stack

Vendors like to claim they do everything. In practice, every B2B lead generation tool is strongest at one or two of these jobs:

  1. Signals: telling you who is showing interest or going through a change right now.
  2. List building: turning a source, such as a search, an audience or an event, into a list of people.
  3. Contact data: work emails, phone numbers and company details.
  4. Outreach: sending and sequencing messages on LinkedIn and email.
  5. CRM and routing: recording conversations and getting hot replies to the right person.

Decide which jobs you need covered first, then pick the fewest tools that cover them well.

Signal and intent tools

These tools answer "who should we talk to this week?" by watching for buying signals: engagement with competitors or topics, website visits, job changes, hiring and funding.

Tool What the vendor says it does Good fit for
GTM Plays AI agent that finds intent signals, scores fit against your ICP, and writes and sends LinkedIn messages from your own account Teams who want signals turned into LinkedIn conversations
Common Room "Buyer intelligence" combining many signal sources, with a 400M+ contact directory and integrations with Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, Outreach and 50+ more Teams with community, product and web signals to unify
UserGems Contact-level signals, with 30+ native signals including job changes, intent, website visits and hiring Teams whose champions move between companies
RB2B Website visitor identification; person-level identification is US-only US-focused teams with meaningful site traffic
Leadfeeder (Dealfront) Website visitor identification and 40+ buying signals, built and hosted in the EU European teams that need EU data residency

Our buying signals guide explains the signal types. Our roundup of LinkedIn buying signal tools goes deeper on the LinkedIn-native options.

List-building tools

These tools turn a source into a list. The source matters more than the tool: a list of people engaging with your competitor who match your ICP is worth far more than a generic database export.

  • LinkedIn Sales Navigator: LinkedIn's own prospecting product, with 50+ search filters, saved lists and lead and account alerts. It is excellent for research. It is not built for exporting lists, and LinkedIn's terms prohibit scraping it.
  • Contact databases such as Apollo and Lusha let you search by title, industry and company size and save the results as lists.
  • Extraction services pull people from a specific LinkedIn source, such as a company page's followers or a post's engagers. Before choosing one, check whether it needs your LinkedIn login, and read LinkedIn's rules on prohibited software.
  • Live Leads by GTM Plays is a one-off extraction tool: give it a LinkedIn company page and get its followers, or a post and get its engagers, paid per lead with credits and separate from the Pro plan.

Contact data and email finders

Once you know who, you need a way to reach them. Contact-data providers maintain large databases of people and companies. Most offer a browser extension and CRM enrichment.

Tool Scale and features (vendor-stated)
Apollo 240M+ contacts and 30M+ accounts; 200+ integrations; buying signals and AI agents; SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001
Lusha 515M+ contacts, 29M+ companies and 165M+ verified emails; 26 buying-signal types
Clay A marketplace of 200+ data and AI vendors for waterfall enrichment, plus Claygent research agents

Pay for contact data only on the people you will actually contact. Enriching a whole database "just in case" is one of the most common ways teams overspend.

Outreach and LinkedIn automation

Outreach tools send connection requests, messages and emails in sequences. The LinkedIn-focused tools differ mainly in how many accounts they run, how they handle safety, and how much of the writing they do for you.

  • Waalaxy: LinkedIn plus email sequences, with up to 800 connection requests a month according to its site, and a 14-day free trial.
  • Expandi: cloud-based LinkedIn automation with white-label options for agencies.
  • HeyReach: multi-sender LinkedIn outreach (unlimited senders on its top plan), sender rotation and a unified inbox; built for agencies running many accounts.
  • Valley: LinkedIn and email outreach written in your voice, driven by signal-based plays.
  • GTM Plays: an AI agent that combines signals, ICP scoring and LinkedIn outreach from your own account, with replies in one inbox.

Comparing two of these? Read our Waalaxy vs Expandi and PhantomBuster vs Waalaxy comparisons. Before automating LinkedIn at all, note that LinkedIn's help centre says it does not permit bots or software that automate activity on its website. Keep volumes human and a person in the loop.

AI lead generation tools and AI SDRs

The newest category is the AI agent that does several jobs at once: it watches for signals, researches and scores prospects, and writes the outreach. The key question is how much control you keep. A good agent lets you:

  • see and edit the ICP it targets,
  • understand why each prospect was chosen,
  • read the messages it writes, and
  • take over the conversation the moment someone replies.

Our AI SDR guide explains what these agents do, where they help, and where people still matter.

Lead generation services and agencies

Many searches for "lead generation company" or "lead generation services" come from teams that want someone else to run outbound. An agency can make sense if nobody on your team can own outbound. The trade-off is that the targeting knowledge, the messaging that works and the relationships stay with the agency. A tool-first approach keeps that learning in-house. Many agencies now run tools like the ones above on their clients' behalf, which is why we wrote a separate guide on lead generation for agencies.

How to choose: five questions

  1. Where do your buyers show intent? If it is LinkedIn, prioritise LinkedIn signal and outreach tools over generic databases.
  2. How big is your market? Small markets punish volume tools; choose precision.
  3. Who will run it? A founder with two hours a week needs automation with guardrails. An SDR team needs seats, routing and reporting.
  4. What do you already pay for? Many CRMs and sequencers include enrichment or basic signals already.
  5. What are the platform risks? Tools that act on LinkedIn through your account carry account risk. Understand LinkedIn's rules before you choose.

Example stacks

Team Lean stack
Solo founder GTM Plays (signals, ICP scoring and LinkedIn outreach) and a simple CRM
Seed to Series A SaaS GTM Plays, a contact-data provider for email, and HubSpot or Attio
Outbound agency Clay for enrichment, an email sequencer, and a LinkedIn tool per client
Enterprise SDR team Sales Navigator, a contact-data provider, a signal platform and Salesforce

Free vs paid lead generation tools

Free plans, trials and free credits are designed to let you test a tool, not to run a programme. Use the trial to answer one question: does this tool do my most important job well on my market? Run it on a real slice of your ICP, measure fit rate and replies, and only then commit. GTM Plays offers a 7-day free trial of Pro, which is $149 a month afterwards.

The bottom line

Pick tools by job, not by feature list. Cover signals, list building, contact data, outreach and CRM with as few tools as possible, put your budget into the job that matters most for your market, and keep a person in the loop wherever the tool speaks to a buyer on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lead generation tool?

Software that helps you find, qualify or contact potential customers. In B2B that usually means signal tools, list builders, contact-data providers, outreach automation and CRMs.

What is the best B2B lead generation software?

It depends on the job you need done. For LinkedIn-first outbound driven by buying signals, an AI agent such as GTM Plays covers signals, ICP scoring and outreach in one place. For raw contact data, providers such as Apollo or Lusha are common choices.

Are there free lead generation tools?

Most tools offer a free plan, a free trial or free credits so you can test them. GTM Plays offers a 7-day free trial of the Pro plan.

What are lead generation platforms like Apollo?

Apollo combines a contact database with sequencing. Alternatives include other databases such as Lusha, enrichment layers such as Clay, and signal-first tools such as GTM Plays or Common Room.

Do I need a lead generation agency or a tool?

Agencies sell done-for-you campaigns; tools let your own team run them. If you have someone who can own outbound for a few hours a week, a good tool is usually cheaper and keeps the learning in-house.
